Are you really a Goal Digger? Don’t just talk about it, be about it!

Let’s dive into S.M.A.R.T. goals as well as healthy tips to achieving Goal Digger status!

S.M.A.R.T. Goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time Bound

Specific: In order to make a goal specific, self-reflection is required. With the self-reflection, you have to be honest and challenge yourself. Get specific, try to begin by answering the W’s: Who, What, When, Why, Where? Who will be involved/impacted? What do you want to achieve? When do you want to achieve by? Why do you want to achieve/accomplish? Where do you stand today?

Measurable: Think of your goal similar to how you’d view a basketball game, would teams play as hard if no one was keeping score? Create a scoreboard! Goals must be measurable so you can tell if you are winning or losing. During goal setting, be sure to include HOW you will measure if you are winning or losing as well as, how often you will update this scoreboard.

Attainable: Is this really attainable? It is crucial to set attainable/realistic, yet challenging goals in order to stay motivated towards achieving.

Relevant: Is this goal applicable to not only the place you are in right now, but where you want to be in the future? Will you receive a sense of self-fulfillment if you accomplish? Review and revise goals when necessary to keep goals relevant.

Timely: Create deadlines! Creating a deadline shows importance and stresses urgency. Importance and urgency lead back to motivation. If we are motivated, we are more likely to work towards achieving.

Healthy Tips to Achieving Goal Digger Status:

Put it in your face! Your scoreboard should be somewhere you view often. I can tell you, a washable marker and bathroom mirror make for a great scoreboard! The scoreboard allows you to quickly see if you are winning or losing. This should also serve as a reminder to update often.

Focus on TODAY! With your scoreboard in your face, reflect on previous actions/behaviors. What worked or did not work? Continue to create commitments often that will lead up to you achieving your overall goal, track these for reflection and learning purposes.

Hold yourself accountable! When game-planning your goal, create an accountability plan with it. If you fail to meet a deadline, have some sort of repercussion for yourself. Detail this when setting your goal/s.

Be honest and vulnerable! In order to grow and achieve goals, you must first and foremost be honest with yourself. To be honest with yourself, you must be vulnerable and willing to acknowledge mistakes/losses. We are all humans, humans make mistakes and lose at times. It is about how you learn from these mistakes/losses and use them to make more impactful commitments in the future that matters.

Tell your mom, brother, cousin, best friend….and the employees at your coffee shop! Telling others can be scary because, what if you fail..?! Yeah, I get it! However, the more individuals you share your goals with, the more committed you will be in achieving these goals. By doing this, you are creating a higher level of self-accountability as well as, a stronger support system.
